Over 2022, Landsec U+I and TOWN, on behalf of Cambridge City Council
and Anglian Water, undertook an extensive engagement process to find
a new name for what was known as the Core Site. The unique democratic
process included extensive local research, a programme with the
Cambridge Regional College, workshops with local stakeholder groups,
and a month-long public vote.
We are now pleased to announce our new name: |

The new name is a tribute to Eva Hartree, the first female mayor of Cambridge who was in office from 1924 to 1925.
Hartree was a pioneering activist for women’s rights and held public service roles in Cambridge for over 40 years.
As the Hon Secretary of Cambridge Women’s Housing Association, Hartree had a groundbreaking role in providing housing for professional women.
Ben Cartwright, Development Director at LandsecU+I, said, “Eva Hartree embodied the progressive spirit of Cambridge,
which is something that runs through everything we do increating this new part of the city. Understanding and engaging with the community is
at the heart of the way we are designing and building Hartree so it’s particularly pleasing that wehave been able to
name it in partnership with local people.
“It feels appropriate that a person who devoted herself to advocating for women’s rights, including the right to
vote, was the most popular name for our site and we are so pleased Eva Hartree’s name will now be etched on the map
of the city long into the future.”
Cllr Mike Davey, Leader of Cambridge City Council, said, “Eva Hartree is a great figure inthe history of Cambridge
and naming such a significant new part of the city in her honour is testament to the lasting impact she has had and
should fill us all with a sense of pride.” |

THE EMERGING PROPOSALS
The emerging proposals for Hartree are based around three key promises of championingpeople, city, and planet to support the health
and wellbeing of residents, visitors, and workers.
The proposals include over 5,000 homes, with amenities and facilities such as schools, shops, workplaces, and parks all located within
easy walking distance. The team has approached the project with the principle of the five-minute neighbourhood as a key driver; helping
residents meet most daily needs within a short walk of home.
During 2021 and 2022, feedback was taken from the local community on early proposals including: school engagement, workshops with young
people, disability groups and many other key local organisations, co-design sessions, and culminated in the two-day People City Planet
Festival. Over 5,000 people were directly engaged, and numerous pieces offeedback received and fed back
into the designs.
